Energy Modelling

We understand the potential that the rapidly evolving discipline of energy modelling can play in our industry. It already plays an important role in demonstrating compliance with energy code requirements, but the true potential for energy modelling lies in its function as a design assistance tool.

Energy modelling is a measuring stick that helps the design team determine the most desirable energy-efficiency solutions. It is also useful in establishing energy design targets and estimating life-cycle costing.

The energy modelling objective changes as the project evolves:

  1. During Schematic Design, an energy model can be applied to a design concept, helping the design team choose between different design options to meet minimum standards and achieve optimal energy performance.
  2. During Design Development, the energy model can be refined to reflect the selected design option. At this stage, energy modelling is effective in evaluating opportunities to finalize design properties such as building envelope insulation levels.
  3. During Construction, the energy model can be finalized, reflecting the final design after shop drawings are completed. This process helps fulfill compliance with Building Code and LEED requirements.

Comprehensive Sustainability Rating System Facilitation and Management

LEED and other sustainability rating systems can be daunting. With our full LEED consulting services, we help simplify the process and relieve your burden by minimizing the LEED documentation requirements on other members of the design team. We have a depth of experience on LEED rating systems honed through participation in nearly 100 LEED projects – and through countless volunteer hours helping the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) adopt various LEED systems for Canada. This has helped us develop a detailed understanding of the best certification strategies.

We work with all LEED rating systems, including LEED-NC, LEED-EB: O&M, LEED for Homes, LEED-CI, and LEED-CS. We also have experience with many other rating systems, including ASHRAE 189.1, BOMA BESt and the Toronto Green Development Standard.

Measurement and Verification

We have extensive experience evaluating utility bills, energy models and building automation system trend logs to reveal the potential of measurement and verification to analyze ongoing building performance and generate continuous improvement. We work hand in hand with the design and operations teams to modify the measurement and verification plan so that it reflects the unique realities of your project and objectives. We follow International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocols that are required for compliance with LEED and other rating systems.
