The Moncton Downtown Centre sports facility will be a hub for year-round, indoor and outdoor entertainment in the heart of the city. The arena features an NHL-sized ice rink with nearly 9,000 spectator seats, lounge areas, and a civic plaza that will host outdoor events, such as ice skating and concerts. This highly-anticipated facility reached substantial completion at the end of June, and is on target to open to the public this fall.
The project team for this entertainment hub included Footprint as the energy modelling consultant, working alongside Smith + Andersen as the mechanical consultant. The Footprint team has developed several energy saving solutions for the centre, including in-slab heating systems that keep hockey spectators comfortable, while conserving electricity and keeping the ice surface at an ideal temperature. The facility also features an extended heat recovery system, which uses heat rejected from the ice plant to supply heating to other areas of the facility. The majority of the facility is equipped with LED lighting fixtures, which also play a role in reducing electricity consumption. These energy saving solutions are projected to reduce electricity requirements by 46%.
Congratulations to the design and construction team for reaching this important milestone! This entertainment centre will bring new vibrancy to Moncton’s downtown neighbourhood for many years to come.
